Information for clubs - Hosting a NZ MTBO Champs

The NZ MTBO Champs is an Orienteering NZ (ONZ) Championship event which runs in accordance with the rules outlined on the ONZ website.

The MTBO Committee is the official ONZ  body that oversees the allocation of the NZ MTBO Champs. The MTBO committee is working towards establishing tools and resources that make it easier for clubs to host the NZ MTBO Champs - we are keen to see clubs properly supported, so that the task of putting on the MTBO Champs is kept manageable, and that two goals are achieved; 1) a quality championship is run that participants can enjoy on an annual basis, and 2) the clubs running the championship event experience the process of running the event positively, and which builds capability and confidence as a result.

We understand that in NZ, most major MTBO events are driven by a few passionate individuals scattered around the country, who gather the support of their local clubs. In many instances more than one club is involved in running a NZ Champs, thus spreading the load and accessing more resources. The MTBO committee would value hearing from anyone who is interested in hosting or being part of hosting a NZ MTBO Champs. We can assist in the following ways:
  • Help facilitate discussions across groups and individuals who have an interest in running events
  • Provide resources, specifically;
    •  A dedicated NZ MTBO Champs website which only requires minimal work and information to tailor it for each different NZ Champs.
    •  Template for the Bulletin, which also makes it easy to add in information tailored to each event.
    •  Other planning resources including organising documents/plans (volunteer planning documents etc), contacts for medals etc
  • Provide advice and guidance on other maters, such as technical, mapping, or system needs, and where clubs could go to get access to the expertise or resource they require.
The future health of MTBO in NZ relies on people and clubs being pro-active in hosting events, and so we encourage anyone with ideas or motivations on this to get in touch at nzmtbo@gmail.com, or contact Alister Metherell, convenor of the MTBO committee at alister.metherell@gmail.com
